Here's Lettie's review of My Week with Marilyn...

I went to see My Week with Marilyn on 27th November 2011 - a nice Sunday evening film. I went to see it, of course, because I am a huge Julia Ormond fan and, no surprises, she stole every scene she was in. She performed the role of Vivienne Leigh to perfection and she looked as lovely as Vivienne Leigh bringing the same lady like charm to the role as the real Vivienne Leigh had in life and on screen. Michelle Williams also portrayed Marilyn Monroe to perfection - unfortunately a very troubled and shallow character in real life - and I would not be surprised if Michelle Williams is nominated for an award for her portrayal of the actress. It is not Julia's best film but it is certainly worth a see for the fans. She has quite alot of screen time and her acting is always superb.

Actress Julia Ormond, known for her roles in "Legends of the Fall" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," has been an activist against human trafficking since the 1990s.

In an interview with CNN's Richard Quest, she talks about how the consumer, government and business all play roles in ensuring the supply chain for goods is free of slavery.

"I ... think it's really important that the consumer acknowledges how challenging this is for business," she says. "I think it's important that we understand it as this is like a virus that affects the supply chain. It's not like business is going out there and looking for slavery. The environment that the supply chain is in enables slavery.

"We need business mentality at the table to finding solutions," she adds. "It's not the NGO's role to work out what's the best solution for that industry. They know their supply chain intimately. ... They are sitting on the solution."

I initially engaged around the issue of trafficking and slavery when I was shocked and spurred into action by reports of sex trafficking. Nothing seemed to me more heinous than the repeated rape and violence its victims endured. Although the first victims that I met were California-based, other travels around the world, to Russia, Ghana, Thailand, Cambodia, India and Europe, painted a wider perspective of how slavery pervades my own life. People often ask me, "Where is it worst?" My answer is, "in my home." In other words, products tainted by slave labor are present in the supply chains of the goods that we purchase, consume, and rely on every day.

We photographed the beautiful and talented Julia Ormond during our trip to L.A. last month. Ormond, perhaps best known for her roles in films like Legends of the Fall and Sabrina, was in a celebratory mood when we saw her, after recently winning an Emmy Award for her supporting role in the HBO movie Temple Grandin. The joy and her passion for performance was evident throughout the photoshoot, as she effortlessly segued from one gorgeous look (and one gorgeous outfit) to the next.

Here is Lettie's review of The Wronged Man:

At the weekend I watched for the first time Julia Ormond's new film 'The Wronged Man'. The story, based on real life events, revolves around a man wrongly convicted for the rape of a child and imprisoned for over twenty years for a crime that he did not commit. Julia Ormond plays the paralegal who fights to secure his release. I felt that there were echoes of 'Smilla's Feeling for Snow' in the film. Ormond was once again playing a character in pursuit of justice with the odds stacked against her. Ormond, as always, played her role with integrity and depth. However, I felt that the film was a little superficial. It failed to go into much detail about the legal process which eventually freed her client. The film concentrated more on the personal relationship between the paralegal and her client and the way that it impacted on their families and personal lives. This is not a bad thing but I felt that the film would have had more depth with more detail about the legal issues involved, eg, The Innocence Project. 'The Wronged Man' is not Ormond's best film but it is a huge improvement on some of her recent roles in 'Surveillance' and 'I know who killed me' - those films did not deserve her. I should also add that it will be a relief to the fans that she has more than five minutes screen time which has not been the case in some of her past productions.

Film Based on Oliver Sacks' 'Last Hippie' Begins Production

New Julia movie alert!

Production has begun on the film adaptation of “The Last Hippie,” a case study written by Oliver Sacks, physician and best-selling author of "Awakenings."

The “Untitled Oliver Sacks Project” stars J.K. Simmons (“Up in the Air” and “Juno”), Julia Ormond (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), Cara Seymour (“An Education”) and Lou Taylor Pucci (“Brotherhood”).

Jim Kohlberg is making his feature film directorial debut. The screenplay was written by Gwyn Lurie and Gary Marks.

The story centers around an engineer (J.K. Simmons) who discovers his long-lost 35-year old son (Lou Taylor Pucci), a former hippie, is suffering from a brain tumor that prevents him from creating new memories. His memory effectively frozen until his parents and doctor (Julia Ormond) discover they can communicate with him through music, including Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead.

It is currently shooting in New York and Westchester County.

Watched "The Wronged Man" tonight. Ms Ormond was spectacular. A good, meaty role for her — and a Southern to boot (she carried it off quite believably and that's not easy). Looks like the movie will be repeated a number of times. It was on here twice on Sunday — 5pm and 9pm — and the same schedule's set for Monday. It's certainly worth a 2nd viewing!!

Julia's appearance on The Bonnie Hunt Show

Today (Thursday) I attended the taping for Julia's appearance on The Bonnie Hunt Show. The show is scheduled to air on Friday. The taping took place at the Culver Studios in Culver City. Julia was the first guest and she sat down with one leg tucked under her. She wore a black button-down shirt with short sleeves and jeans. At the start of the show, Bonnie had been discussing the many plastic surgeries of Heidi Montag (I really hope that she's not known in the U.K.) [Jack: Well, for what it's worth I don't know who she is!] and about women and their issues with their appearances. So when Julia sat down, Bonnie continued to discuss those themes. Julia said something about how people blame men for these problems, but it's women who place pressure on themselves.

Bonnie asked her about her childhood and her daughter. Julia said that she was a tomboy and appearances weren't really emphasized. She said that her daughter wasn't really a girly girl, but she did have her "spangly moments" and she had her long hair cut off. She also said that her daughter was uninterested in what her mother does for a living.

At some point, there was some static problem or something with Julia's mike and it looked as though they might have to stop for a bit to handle that. Julia looked to the audience and said, "Talk amongst yourselves." Well, it turned out that there was no problem and the interview continued.

Then Julia talked about her movie and discussed the Innocence Project. They showed a clip from the movie, and when they show the clips on the monitors, they dim the lights at the front of the stage, so I didn't catch Julia's reaction. She must have had a negative reaction to seeing herself onscreen, because when the lights came up again, Bonnie made some comment about Julia's reaction. Julia said something about cringing when she sees herself onscreen. She then made a reference to some scene from the movie Julie & Julia when Julia Child and her sister were looking at themselves in the mirror before leaving somewhere.

The taping ran long, and I don't know how they will they edit the program for the broadcast.

I forgot to mention the part when Bonnie asked Julia about her first job in showbiz. Julia said that she was cast in a cottage cheese commercial because of her ability to make her eyes roll in different directions. The commercial was supposed to have pineapple chunks flying out from the cottage cheese and she was supposed to look at the pineapple parts going all over the place. However, that idea was rejected and she still got to do the commercial. Then she did a demonstration of her eyes darting in different directions.

And an update from R about what was cut out:

The interview felt edited but apparently *a lot* was left out. The only material that stayed on air was Julia making her introductory remarks about plastic surgery, a few sentences about the movie and the clip and her first job and the eye-rolling bit. Everything else about her daughter, the Innocence Project, watching herself on-screen wast cut out. Very nice report you got there. Julia also made a joke about being 57 and Hunt creduously asked her of that was true. It was kinda shocking.. lol

Seventeen year old force-of-nature Emelia starts a new job at The Cliff House, a small hotel run by the dysfunctional Fischer family. Beth Fischer, also seventeen, is cramming for her exams in a desperate bid to escape to University. Dad Jonathan is an author. Once the bright young thing of the literary establishment, he is now suffering interminable writer's block. Wife Joa runs the hotel Jonathan bought with earnings from his first book. She resents it, him, and everyone around her as she gave up her 'promising career as an actress' for this.

Albatross starts shooting on the Isle of Man

Sebastian Koch, Julia Ormond, Felicity Jones and Peter Vaughn will star in coming of age drama Albatross, which starts shooting on the Isle of Man tomorrow (November 3).

Written by Tamzin Rafn, the feature is being directed by Niall MacCormik, whose credits include Margaret Thatcher TV biopic The Long Walk To Finchley.

CinemaNX, the film financing and production company backed by the Isle of Man government, is behind the project.

The film is being produced by Adrian Sturges, who also produced The Disappearance of Alice Creed for CinemaNX earlier this year.

Julia Ormond has been cast in a four-episode arc for the upcoming season of Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.” She will play a well-respected international broadcast journalist who falls in love with one of the hospital’s doctors. Ormond just wrapped production of “The Wronged Man” telepic for Lifetime.

Watch out for... Julia Ormond, Sebastian Koch and Felicity Jones, who are in negotiations to star in a movie called Albatross, which will be directed by Niall MacCormick, who made the TV drama about young Mrs Thatcher, The Long Walk To Finchley, with Andrea Riseborough. Albatross is about a failed writer, a beach house and a young woman. Filming will take place on the Isle of Man. Mr Koch was in the award-winning film The Lives Of Others.

It’s been really tricky to get cast in a modern American role. I’m just not thought of that way. I loved the script and thought, in Jen’s hands in particular, it was something that I was really interested in doing, and so I kind of begged her for the role. I think because the film provokes discussion for its use of violence and in particular the cocktail of humor and violence together, Jen said, "Can you afford to do this movie?" And I said, "As an actor I actually feel I can’t afford not to do this movie."

Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado has been cast as Joseph in Aloe Entertainment's "Mary, Mother of Christ."He joins Camilla Belle, Al Pacino, Peter O'Toole and Julia Ormond in the action drama about the biblical journey of young Mary and Joseph during the terrible reign of Herod the Great. James Foley ("Glengarry Glen Ross") is directing from a script by Barbara Nicolosi and "The Passion of the Christ" co-writer Benedict Fitzgerald.The film is scheduled to begin principal photography in October.

Here's Lettie's review of Surveillance.

I received my DVD copy of Surveillance at the weekend which had been ordered online for me. I heard the sound of the letter flap opening and the thud of the package onto the floor and knew instantly what had arrived. My heart skipped a beat with excitement as I thought about the new Julia Ormond movie I was going to watch that very day. Fans of the actress will understand this excitement as artistic output from Julia Ormond in recent years has been few and far between. True, she has recently appeared in small parts in Benjamin Button and Che: Part One but I really wanted to see her in a bigger part and I thought that Surveillance would deliver and it did: Julia Ormond played one of the main characters in the film. However, she played a role like none she has ever played before and it has taken some adjustment on my part to get used to the fact.

The opening scene of the film could have come straight out of 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre'. Surveillance can be described as a thriller - horror - serial killer - murder mystery with a twist (which is obvious) at the end. The scenes of violence are graphic and bloody. There is no moral to the tale either - what happens just happens and it is then over. It is meaningless violence. It is a trashy, violent film. It is the second film of this calibre that Ormond has appeared in, the first being IKWKM, and let us hope that it is the last. Julia Ormond, Michael Ironside and Bill Pullman are fine actors and deserve much better roles. I had eagerly awaited this film and to say that I was disappointed would be an understatement.

Surveillance DVD review

My Surveillance DVD arrived from Amazon UK yesterday and I watched the movie last night. I'll try to put down some initial thoughts without spoiling the story.

The movie is very much in that territory marked out by David Lynch. Thankfully there is a little more plot going on than in, say, INLAND EMPIRE.

There are two stories unfolding.

A framing story features two FBI agents who arrive at a police station to interview three witnesses. We're not told what they witnessed but it appears to be Something Very Bad.

The second story is a flashback to an almost deserted highway in a desolate part of the United States. Two of the most unpleasant cops you could ever hope to meet are taking potshots at passing motorists. The viewer know that Something Very Bad is going to happen because the little girl "saw something" and there is an effective buildup of dread.

Yes, there is a twist. To be honest I kind of saw it coming, but cleverly the big reveal is not right at the end of the movie so it still came as a surprise.

Thinking back to the earlier parts of the movie some of the dialog takes on a whole new meaning, such as Bill Pullman's line "you can't save her".

Julia gets to play a character completely different from any she has played before. And she gets to do things that she has never done before. You'll know it when you see it.

It's the small moments that work for me, such as Bill Pullman's doodle over the word "evidence".

In summary a very effective little movie. It has its unpleasant moments but is also packed with black humour, many involving the two druggies in the red car.

The DVD contains a deleted scene plus an alternate ending that isn't quite is a bleak as the one that was used.

Julia Ormond's career break made her more determined to succeed as an actress.

The 'Surveillance' star - who became a well-known TV and movie star in the 90s before relaunching her career last year with 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' - says taking time off to raise her daughter Sophie, now four, gave her the determination to seek out more "varied" movie roles.

She said: "I guess this little break made me decide that I needed to try to work harder, or be more disciplined about finding roles that were more different, that were more varied."

Meanwhile, the 44-year-old actress - who also runs New York City movie productions company Indican - enjoyed filming independent film 'Surveillance' because it allowed her to work closely with female directorial staff.

She said: "Until women can carve out the time and have the time to do their own creative stuff - and be as great and courageous with the voice as director-and-writer Jennifer Lynch has been with 'Surveillance' - then we're not going to change how we are perceived."

The British actress was inspired to launched her own company because she believes it is important for female actresses to ensure their voices are heard over their male colleagues.

She added to Dark Horizons: "If it's a majority of male writers and a majority of male directors, then they're not necessarily going to be disposed to creating roles for women. I guess my take is that the only way to counter it is to do your own stuff."
